Following the release of his third studio album Graduation, the remainder of 2007 and the following year featured events that emotionally affected Kanye West. On November 10, 2007, West's mother Donda West died due to complications arising from cosmetic surgery involving a tummy tuck and breast reduction procedure. Months later, West broke off his engagement and separated with his fiancée Alexis Phifer. At the same time, West displayed struggle in adapting to his newfound pop star status he had once strived to achieve, often becoming the subject of media scrutiny. The loss, loneliness and longing for companionship and a sense of normalcy served to inspire the conception 808s & Heartbreak. West stated that "This album was therapeutic — it's lonely at the top."
West felt that the emotions he felt within his heart could not be fully expressed simply through rapping, saying that aside from the fact that rapping had limitations, there were "melodies that were in me — what was in me I couldn't stop." West went to classify 808s & Heartbreak as a pop album, stating his disdain towards the contemporary backlash to the concept of pop music and expressed that some greatest musicians of all time, particularly Michael Jackson and Madonna, were pop artists. He later stated that he wishes to present the music as a new genre called "pop art", not to be confused with the visual art movement of the same name.
Ik vind het een vette plaat! vind het persoonlijk iets hebben dat artiesten hun hart uitstorten in hun album. Denk dat Mr. West er er wel in geslaagd is met dit album te schrijven..

Yep,vindek ook. en da heb 'k zeker gemerkt op zenne show met "heartless".

Die plaat is supervet! Vooral de eerste 4-5 liedjes. Bij een eerste beluistering vond ik het maar matig, maar éénmaal dat ik het concept begreep, zag ik er nieuwe dingen in en begreep ik meer wat zijn bedoeling was. Hoe je het ook draait of keert, op dit moment is KW één van de beste en meest oprechte hiphop-artiesten, één die weet te innoveren en nieuwe dingen te proberen. Ik kijk alvast uit naar die van 2009.
Edit: hoe goed deze'808's & heartbreak' ook moge zijn, het beste van hem blijft 'The College Dropout'

De artwork mag er ook best wezen trouwens. Dat wordt een beetje verwaarloosd in het hiphop-genre, precies.

ha ha ha, wat een zielig album.
Sorry een heel album lang volhouden aan auto tune is gewoon te. Na twee liedjes word het al een gimmick. Ik geloof zelfs niet dat kanye "experimenteert", nee hij kapitaliseert gewoon de autotune trend. Het enige verschil is dat hij ipv een auto tune hook gebruikt, gebruikt hij het hele album lang autotune.
En dan beweert kanye dat hij the voice of the generation is waarvan ik het volgende antwoord zin heb gelezen van stephen colbert die perfect de zegt waar het opstaat.
'sir, you are not the voice of this generation of this decade! in fact, with all the auto-tuning on your record, you are barely the voice on your own albums'.
