1 december, Wereld AIDS Dag. Voor de meesten onder ons waarschijnlijk een "ver-van-m'n-bed-show" en daarom zou ik er toch wat aandacht aan willen besteden dmv enkele foto-essays...
Het geweldige Magnum-fotoagentschap heeft een reeks foto-essays gemaakt over AIDS/HIV. Elk foto-essay schetst de situatie in een bepaald land en vertelt het verhaal van enkele seropositieven die in dat land wonen. In totaal komen er negen landen aan bod(Mali, Rusland, Swaziland, India, Rwanda, Haïti, Vietnam, Zuid-Afrika, Peru). De lengte van de filmpjes varieert van acht tot zestien minuten. Om alles te bekijken heb je dus wat tijd nodig, maar het is zeker de moeite waard!

Een ander foto-essay dat zeker de moeite waard is om eens te bekijken is BLOODLINE: AIDS and Family van de Amerikaanse fotografe Kristen Ashburn. In haar foto-essay probeert ze de impact van armoede en HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe in beeld te brengen. Ashburn heeft het hele project en de vele reizen naar Afrika allemaal zelf gefinancierd(geen tussenkomst van een fotoagentschap whatsoever) en het resultaat mag er zeker zijn. Zonder twijfel een knap staaltje fotografie!
The AIDS pandemic continues to devastate sub-Saharan Africa. Two million people died from the disease in 2005 alone. Twelve million children have lost at least one parent.
The statistics are staggering.
"But we are not only talking of numbers here," says Paddington Mazarura of Zimbabwe, a career professional infected with HIV. "We are talking of people."
Kristen Ashburn's BLOODLINE: AIDS and Family is the story of these men, women and their children.
Ashburn's photographs are heartbreaking. But they also tell us of something more. They remind us of how tenuous our connection is to each other. In doing so, they show that what matters most is the care we give to those in need.
